Description

This exciting conservation trail is a hands-on adventure which offers you genuine work towards protecting the local wildlife. Located in the Waterberg region of South Africa, this ride is for those who love nature and would like to learn more about African wildlife. You will sleep out in the bush most nights and must be ready to pitch your own tent, hike on foot where needed and with an easy-going attitude - the nature of this programme requires flexibility! Some days you may need to ride at speed to cover the ground whilst other times you may need to walk over difficult terrain with your horse. Sometimes you might even need to make a night ride (assuming there is enough moonlight), depending on the work that needs doing.

Activities during this ride may include tracking and counting game, mapping game locations, sweeping for snares, patrolling fences, informing on human and animal activity in the area, night patrols and herding cattle. The programme also includes some classroom learning, although your 'classroom' is likely to be under a tree or around a fire, perhaps discussing conservation methods or bush first aid for example. This is really a hands-on adventure for those ready to learn and participate - at the end of the trip there is a short exam, to recap all you have learnt, and participants will be awarded a certificate.

Food & Accommodation

Food

During this adventurous, hands-on trip participants cook their own meals over the campfire with assistance. The meals are pre-planned, tasty and easy to manage.

The programme includes all meals, snacks, tea and coffee at the lodge and bush camps. Non-alcoholic and limited alcoholic beverages are also included for the duration of your stay.

Accommodation

The programme starts and ends at a permanent tented camp with rooms set up under canvas, overlooking the plains and their resident wildlife. For the nights in between you sleep in small, traditional camping tents and participants pitch their own tents, with help from the team - you will generally move camp every two nights. These are one-man tents and camping mattresses and sleeping bags are provided for you, as are lanterns. Bush showers are available in camps and there is a long-drop style camping loo (with a seat and inside a canvas cubicle) which is then filled with ash and soil.

Other Activities

This trip is only suitable for riders but included various conservation activities, both on and off the horse.

Travel

The nearest airport is Johannesburg ORT - transfers are available at an added cost and the drive takes approximately 2.5 - 3 hours.

Itinerary & Pricing

Day 1

Riding: 5 - 10 kilometres

You will be collected from the airport (additional cost) and transferred directly to base camp, a drive of around 2.5 - 3 hours. You will arrive in time for lunch and a warm welcome from the local team.

There will be a safety briefing and a rundown of procedures for the following days. Information will be provided on how to use the equipment such as maps (for logging game counts), tents, binoculars, lanterns and other camping items. Each participant will be provided with a backpack in which you'll need to pack all your things for the week, with the remainder of your luggage staying behind at base camp. We will provide size specifications for the backpack and weight limitations - you won't need much but there will be room for all your clothes and essentials.

You will be allocated your horse after the team have discussed your riding level and preferences with you, then there will be an intro ride around the farm in the afternoon to get acquainted with them. Dinner and overnight at base camp.

Days 2 to 6

Riding: 25 - 30 kilometres

The logistics vehicle will be packed and ready to set out and the horses and guides will be ready at the picket line. Each morning you will ride out around sunrise, making your way towards your lunch spot in the bush, before heading on to your overnight destination. The logistics vehicle will travel ahead with water, food and equipment and will set up the picket line for the horses and the campfire. Each participant will pitch their own tent, with help from the team, and cooking will be done jointly by the group over the campfire. The impact of the camp will always be minimal and the group will be equipped with lanterns, torches, one-man tents, sleeping bags and mattresses.

Each day you will ride approximately 25 - 30kms but this will depend on the work being performed. Night rides may also be called for, if there is sufficient moonlight, and you may need to walk and lead your horse over rough terrain. Sometimes the riding will be slow over rocky ground, climbing to great heights, but other times you will need to ride faster to cover the ground. Your hosts are operating over a huge area (75,000ha) and if quick assistance is needed at a distance then the horse box may be used to move the horses to the next location. Usually you will spend two night at each location, one day riding to the next area and one full day exploring the surroundings and gathering data. Tasks include tracking game, game counts/mapping, sweeping for snares, informing on human and animal activity, fence patrols, cattle herding and night patrols.

Day 7

Riding: 25 - 30 kilometres

You will make your way back towards base camp and on arrival you will take care of the horses first and then compile all the data you have gathered to hand it over to the reserve management. You will be able to enjoy a good shower, a WiFi connection and a rest before a celebratory three course dinner and presentation of certificates. There will be drinks, music and a great atmosphere.

Day 8

Riding: 5 - 10 kilometres

After breakfast you will hopefully have time for a final ride out of base camp before transfer back to the airport.

Accommodation

Accommodation is a mix of permanent tented camps and mobile camping with limited facilities.

Experience Intermediate / Experienced
