Description

The ride will take you to the best of Iceland's Volcanos, Valleys and Hot Springs. With very comfortable Hotel or Guesthouse accommodation at the farm, you will spend 3 days on horseback exploring the fascinating volcanic mountains nearby.

The tour takes you over moss-covered lava fields created by the volcano Hengill and into a unique area of exceptional beauty with volcanic formations, green valleys and hot springs. You visit the hidden Valley of the Horses, Maradalur, ride along the Jórukleif range of mountains and continue through picturesque landscape along the largest lake in Iceland, Thingvallavatn. The lake is located at the national park and historical site of Thingvellir in a valley created by the movements of the Eurasian and American continental plates.

You pass by a forest with steaming hot springs and a waterfall, enjoy beautiful views and follow the path leading up to Reykjadalur Valley with its hot river. Before continuing on the mountain trail back to Hveragerði you will have the opportunity to relax in the valley’s warm, geothermal river. Don't forget your swimsuit and towel!

Horses & Riding

Tack

Saddles used in Iceland are similar to dressage saddles with a flat seat and are very comfortable for the long hours in the saddle and help English style riders master the tolt. The Icelandic riding style is similar to English, but stirrups are worn long. The bridles are simple snaffles, and the bridles have a detachable nose band and clip on reins.

Horses

Your hosts breed all their Icelandic horses and are proud to produce well-behaved and well-gaited riding horses for their guests. Your hosts have up to 350 horses at their farm in the summer and 60-100 in the winter. Icelandic horses arrived with the first settlers from Scandinavia in the 9th century and have played a vital role in Icelandic history and culture for centuries. This breed can master five gaits rather than just the usual three and is best known for the tölt, a special gait which is very smooth and comfortable for the rider. Its lively temperament and friendly personality are amazing, and it is incredibly strong and sure-footed, allowing riders to feel safe and experience the soft tölt.

Please note: Icelandic horses are not vaccinated and are therefore susceptible to infectious agents from abroad! Used riding clothes and boots should be washed in a washing machine or dry cleaned prior to entering the country. Clothes, boots and helmets that can't be placed in a washing machine or dry cleaned should be washed and disinfected. Importing of used riding equipment and riding gloves is strictly prohibited

Food & Accommodation

Food

The hotel restaurant offers a cozy and inviting atmosphere where meals focus on Icelandic cuisine. Your hosts always try their best to serve meals made from locally grown produce, much of it coming from the town of Hveragerði, less than 2 km away from the stables. Meat and fish are provided by local farmers and fishermen.

Lunch is usually either packed in saddle bags or the cook meets the group. Vegetarian and gluten-free meals are available on request – please book in advance. Please note that dinner on the last evening is not included.

Accommodation

You can choose to stay in Hotel Eldhestar (or similar local hotel) or neighbouring Guesthouse Eldhestar for the duration of your itinerary. Both accommodations are owned and run by your hosts and are inspired by the beautiful valleys and hot springs surrounding the volcano Hengill - the hotel’s name “Eldhestar” translates to “Volcano Horses“.

The hotel's design is very much reflected by the rich cultural heritage of the area from the natural materials used in the interiors to the traditional Icelandic cuisine served in the restaurant. The guesthouse is very comfortable and has a more classic feel with shared bedrooms and bathroom.

All meals will be taken in the hotel restaurant.

Travel

Guests should fly to Reykjavik for this tour. The meeting point is the BSI Bus Station in Reykjavík on day one at between 17:30 & 18:00.

International flights to Iceland will land at Keflavik international airport (roughly 45 minutes outside of Reykjavik city). There is a regular bus service between the airport and the city centre.

On departure day, your hosts will transfer you back to the city of Reykjavik (not the airport) late afternoon. However, please note that this transfer can often be delayed for any number of reasons. To be safe and avoid missing your flight, we would advise planning to spend this final night in the city and fly the next day.

Itinerary & Pricing

Day 1 - Arrival

Riding: No riding.

Your itinerary starts in the evening. Riders who arrive the same day to Iceland should take the Flybus from the airport to the bus station BSÍ in Reykjavík. Your hosts will meet you at the bus station or at your hotel/ guesthouse in Reykjavik between 17:30- 18:00 and drive you to the farm Vellir near Hveragerði.

You will stay Hotel Eldhestar (or similar local hotel) or Guesthouse Eldhestar depending on your chosen itinerary for the whole of your ride and your breakfast and evening meals will be served in the hotel restaurant. On your first evening you will meet your fellow riders for dinner and your hosts will give you further information about your itinerary.

Day 2 - Vellir – Kolvidarhóll

Riding: 4 hours

You will start the day by getting to know the horses with a short ride in the paddocks at the farm. After an early lunch, you will ride the ancient route from Hveragerdi to Hellisheidi. After reaching the moor, you continue to the Hengill volcano along the Kristnitökuhraun lava field. This lava came from the eruption of Hengill in the year 1000, the same year Iceland officially became Christian. The old folktales say that the eruption was the revenge of the old gods Thór, Ódinn and Freyr.

After visiting the volcano you continue on the track between lava and hills (“milli hrauns og hlidar”), down to Kolvidarhóll, where people have stopped to rest for hundreds of years.

Riding distance: 21 km

Day 3 - Kolvidarhóll – Nesjavellir

Riding: 6 - 7 hours

On your ride today you continue North below the Húsmúli and Hengill mountains. You will need to dismount and lead the horses through a narrow cleft to Marardalur (Valley of Horses).

The ride continues through Dyrfjöll (Door-Mountains), and when you reach the mountain top you have a view over Lake Thingvallavatn. The lake is by the cleft where Icelanders had their democratic meetings called Althing for hundreds of years. The track continues to Nesjavellir, where the tour ends. You and the horses will be driven back to the farm and hotel.

Riding distance: 30 km

Day 4 - Reykjadalur- Vellir

Riding: 5 - 6 hours

After breakfast you first ride along the slopes of Reykjafjall mountain and continue on nice riding trails surrounding the small village Hveragerði. The path then takes you through a green forest to a colorful geothermal valley with hot springs, an area which expanded dramatically during an earthquake in 2008.

On your way towards the green hills surrounding the volcano Hengill you will have a good opportunity to try the “tölt”, the special gait of the Icelandic horse. The horses then take us on a leisurely pace following narrow trails up into the valley Reykjadalur.

You pass the beautiful waterfall Djúpagilsfoss and some hot springs before we reach Reykjadalur valley and will have the opportunity to take a relaxing bath in a warm stream. During the ride down the valley enjoy fascinating panoramas over the surroundings, the village Hveragerði, picturesque farmland and all the way down to the coastline, where you might see the Westman Islands, weather permitting.

The final part of your ride continues along the mountain slopes again back to the farm where the tour ends. After some refreshments, the bus takes you back to Reykjavík at about 16:15.

Riding distance: 19 km
